The Name Game

My best friend is trying desperately to come up with a name for her newborn. Every time she brings up a name, we play this game called “How will the a$$hole kids on the playground make fun of it?”

You know the kids I’m talking about. There are always kids like this. Your name could be benign like “John” and these kids will start calling you “toilet” or “bathroom boy.” I say this from experience. No, my name is not John. But as a kid, we watched the movie “Old Yeller” in school. This one boy in particular grabbed hold of that and decided my name sounded close enough. He called me “Old Yeller” for the next three years of my life. He even barked at me. He was an a$$hole. Almost every day for the next three years I went home in tears. He was the classic bully.

It is the bully that I keep in mind when thinking of names for babies. So, if my best friend says she wants to name her son something crazy like “Pooper” or something, I, as a good auntie, should stand up and say hell no!

Don’t leave me hanging. Tell me your horrible name stories. And, if you have a baby name idea, throw it my way!

My maiden name was Dewitt, I always signed my homework “E.Dewitt”……say it really fast and, it sounds like Idiot….never made that connection until a boy in my highschool saw me sign my name, and asked if I was an idiot. Only that one time. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

My friend’s mom was a teacher in Arkansas, and was telling me about a little girl in her class named As*hole (spelled A-S-S-H-O-L-E pronounced Ah-shoal-lee). I couldn’t even begin to imagine the amount of therapy that child was going to need… or the difficulties finding a job with that on the resume…

When we named our children we went through and thought of nicknames too, even with initials. Example our last name starts with W, prior to thinking of initials I was going for William Wyatt W then my own Dad asked if he could call him dot com since his initials would be WWW. Needless to say our kids are safe, I hope. ๐Ÿ™‚

My husband wanted to name our 1st son, “Lauren” (however it’s really spelled) because he loves Ralph Lauren… We finally agreed on “Lorne” (rhymes w/horn) with the middle name Alexander…we figured if he does get teased, he can always go by his middle name…we’ll see!

Tara, That sounds like a much better plan. I was at the ER the other day and there was a little boy there named “Sky.” It did not help that he had long strawberry blonde hair. Give the kid a chance!

I wanted to name my son Christian, but his intials would have been COC. No one believed me when I said that would be a problem. Needless to say, I named him Dean, his initials are DOC & lots of his friends call him “Doc”. Glad I fought for a different 1st name ๐Ÿ™‚

I wanted names for my kids that were diffrent, but not strange, but names that also had good meanings we went with
Isaiah (from the Bible) means Salvation of God
    Mahayla—– means woman of sthrength
    Samara—— means lead by God

so they don’t have common names but names they shouldnt get mad fun of ๐Ÿ™‚

Erin, I love unique names. I really wanted to name my daughter Zosia (a Polish name) but my ex would have none of it. Bible names are nice. My kids each have a saint middle name.
